What AI search changes for online retailers
Shoppers increasingly start with a question rather than a keyword. "Which air fryer is easiest to clean for a family of four?" "Where can I buy running shoes with free returns in Ireland?" Assistants like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Google's AI Mode answer with a short list of products and stores, and many shoppers act on that list without visiting ten websites.
If your store isn't in that answer, you weren't in the consideration set. Your analytics won't show the lost visit, because nobody clicked.
02
How AI assistants pick the brands they mention
No one outside these companies knows the exact mechanics, and anyone promising guaranteed placement is guessing. What consistently helps:
Pages that answer the buyer's actual question
, including use case, budget and location.
Consistent facts about you everywhere
what you sell, where you deliver, returns, price ranges.
Corroboration from other sites
reviews, directories, trade press, comparison and buying-guide content.
Clean, crawlable structure
clear headings, structured data and pages that load for crawlers.
03
Why category and buying-guide content matters more than product pages alone
Product pages answer "what is this item?". Buyers ask "which one should I get, and why?". Those are answered by buying guides, comparisons, how-tos and category explainers. Most stores have very little of this content, and that's the gap AI answers expose.
04
Quality over volume: why mass-generated pages backfire
Publishing thousands of thin pages fast is the quickest way to waste crawl budget and erode trust with search engines, especially on newer domains. The approach that holds up is fewer, better pages released at a pace your domain can absorb, with duplicates and low-value pages kept out.
05
How Straider builds a discovery layer for retail
Straider is an organic discovery intelligence platform. It runs a continuous loop: discover the questions your buyers ask, prioritise the ones worth answering, create content that meets quality gates, publish it to a dedicated discovery layer (usually a subdomain hub linked to your store), measure impressions and clicks in Search Console and GA4, and improve what's working.
Every page passes quality checks before it goes live, including deduplication, relevance checks and QA. Releases are paced rather than dumped. See how the platform works.
06
A 5-minute self-test
Step 01
Open two or three AI assistants.
Step 02
Ask the question your best customer would ask, with your category and city: "best place to buy [category] online in [Dublin / London / Cape Town]".
Step 03
Note which stores come up and what's said about them.
Step 04
Repeat for one buying-guide question ("which [product] should I buy for [use case]").
If your competitors are named and you aren't, that's the content gap to close.
